Holding History within our hands..

Septarian Egg Carving

Ok, so it’s no secret that Septarian (Dragon Stone) has quickly become one of my absolute favourite Crystals! Not only is the exquisite natural design completely captivating, but the humming ancient Earth energy that is emitted from within its depths is unlike anything I have known.. But ALSO the history.

I am always drawn into learning origin stories and this one was sure to please! The word septarian comes from the Latin word "septum," meaning "partition."

During the Cretaceous Period when Earth’s sea levels were much higher this combination was comprised of Argonite, Calcite, Limestone and white or clear Barite.

With a unique chain of events from Volcanic eruptions and natural occurrences resulted in the death of a large amount of small sea life. As the specimens decomposed on the seafloor, sediments accumulated and created nodules. When the oceans receded, the nodules became exposed to the elements and dried out causing them to shrink and cause cracking, the incredible patterns you see inside Septarian are the result of this cracking!! Septarian nodules can contain angular cavities, which are called septaria & create divisions throughout the stone. These unique septaria can be any length and each Septarian can have many different cracks. Calcite leeches into the cracks of septarian to form calcite crystals on a layer of aragonite, which is on bentonite clay. Eventually, bentonite is replaced with limestone, resulting in the nodule turning to stone.

When Crystal Carvers expose the internal Crystalline they can shape the external stone into the shape best suited for the natural formation. Sometimes you will see an egg, sphere, heart or just a open faced display.

How freaking cool is that?!

These ancient stones house a multitude of metaphysical properties, believed to be a strong stone of protection and healing vibrations, it will nurture, ground and aid in the communication skills of the holder. It is associated with the root, solar plexus and sacral chakras.

Septarian stones are found along the Gulf of Mexico, all the way inland to Southern Utah. Other specimens have been discovered along Madagascar where water levels similarly receded.

Basically whatever Septarian that remains on Earth today is the last that Humankind will ever have the pleasure of seeing.. or holding within their hands. As someone that has had the utter pleasure, I would say should the chance to hold one arise, even just for a moment, please - take it!

Blessings always, light and love

Ashley
